what are you doing?

I've had my head neck deep in trying to build a database app for one of my game projects. It's taking longer than it should since I don't know much about how to do it and am having to figure out what I'm doing as I go, but it's slowly coming together.

Also been working on a new tabletop RPG setting for a game I DM on Sundays, which has been crazy fun. So far the setting is over the top, taking place in a large victorian era esque steampunk city established 800 years ago by an alliance of Oni-styled orc and human clans who needed to band together to fend off C'thulu worshipping High Elven Vikings. Building an industrial magitek/steampunk city has been loads of fun, and a pretty good way to blow off steam. Right now my players are dealing with a complicated mystery plot that doesn't make much sense yet, but it has resulted in some heavy hitters in the city's political world moving resources around, sent large underground organizations in hiding, and started an escalating series of gang wars in the lower and underground parts of town.

Also playing PSO2, enjoying some of the shows the past few seasons. My backlog is growing, sadly. I need to get caught up on Bakarina, I've been enjoying the Manga for that, but I'm still only on ep 2 of the anime.

As usual currently active on the Azur Lane Official discord, and playing my gatcha games I am still currently playing on my phone.

Been on discord a bit too much and almost forgot to check in here now and again.

Life update after way too long idle!

Got everything unloaded (mostly intact) off the moving trucks at the new place this weekend. Starting to get unpacked and settled in, assess damage, etc. Will be back off to the old house toward the end of the week to get it ready for sale, but yeah, this is a huge change. ^^

Upgrading from a plot of land barely big enough for the house in an arid steppe to a full acre of land in rural grassland is amazing. Walked barefoot in the grass for the first time in I don't know how long. (last home we Xeriscaped because water restrictions, and the place was mostly thistle weeds) After we settle in, we're going to build a woodshop building in the back and actually be able to setup all our woodworking equipment and have plenty of room for my crazy maker stuff to boot. We kept trying to get enough room to do some carpentry projects, but the garage was an overglorified closet in the last home and we could just never clear enough space to work.

Perhaps the thing I'm most excited about is the gigabit fiber. Cox gigabit for cheaper than my crappy comcast 250 Mb? Yep. So very much yep. Once this is all over, I'm getting caught up on my anime backlog with download speeds of "yes"! ^^

Hi Maiku, hope you're doing well. I don't know, it's really weird checking this place out again (very unfamiliar for me lol) but if this forum is putting unnecessary stress for you and as you said it's a dead forum and unfortunately it's been like that for awhile now, I would say bin it mate.

I haven't actually been watching anime for about 6 or 7 years, there were a few that I would watch on occasion like a season of Boku no Hero Academia and that was that but recently I just wanted to watch all the stuff that I potentially missed out on and it is incredibly hard to strike up a conversation about anime on other sites, the site I use the most for anime is MAL, it's a nice place but it's very different to FTV's forums.

Its kinda the same for me, I've not watched anime for awhile, i started 3 series maybe 2 years ago and didn't finish them, not the fault of the animes but I just got distracted by other things. I don't really use other sites, I have a very out of date list on MAL but I don't use the forums. My forum activity kinda stayed and died on here really.

Well, i do check in once in a while but nobody even bothers to respond to me.

It will sadden me to see this place go, as I really loved it back in the day. Does it really have to go? Is there some place where people from FTV meet? Other than here obviously.

I honestly didn't think you would want me to respond to you, but I will as it seems this one is to me. I have no intention of closing FTV, but I will likely need to move it to cheaper hosting, it is just costing me too much on a monthly basis. Problem is, cheaper hosting is less reliable, there will be the odd time when the site might not be available for 10-20mins, maybe 1-2 times a month.

Btw, you don't have to be retired, if you want to be active again I can put it back to the previous status.

sure, why not.

Other than that I didnt mean just you ignoring me. :) I have written messages to former friends on FTV, who were even active at the time of me writing them and no response. So.... i kinda feel ignored and thats not very encouraging.

Btw, I also dont watch anime as much as I used to. Thats what 2 kids under 5y will do to you, hehehe. This season I only watch 2 titles and that seems to be the averige for me. And some seasons I dont watch anything at all and play a PS game or something.

ok status has been restored.

I actually had an idea last night, would anyone be interested in an Anime watching club?

So basically a group of us watch an anime together and comment in a thread after each episode. By watch together I mean watch separately on their own time, but we report back into a thread, ideally we don't go ahead to the next episode until each person has seen that episode. We could vote on what anime we pick each time. Basically like an old fashioned book club. Doesn't need to be a new or current series, whatever gets the most votes. We could take suggestions from anyone who wants to join, put them to the vote, and go from there.

I feel it might get us back into anime, it creates some activity again on the forum, sure its one thread but honestly that would be something right now. I am so out of touch on anime, I don't even know where to begin, so the idea of someone else, or the group choosing the series appeals to me.

I got the idea from 'Daft's Anime Hour' where he'd apparently co-watch a series with people live, although I don't have something that would do it live.

Book club type format sounds good. I finally got my move finished up about two weeks ago and have been slowly catching up on my gigantic backlog of everything. (DIY Remodeling sucks.)

I've mostly been watching the current season, but there's a bunch of stuff that aired in the last few years that would make for a good group watchlist. I was just thinking that it'd be nice to get back into reviewing stuff again.

I try to pop in when I remember to. I still remember you

As for a place where people meet, I've thought for a good while about a FB group, Discord channel or MAL group - since I think we all have MAL accounts on there - where we can just chat doesn't even need to definitely be about anime, at least if @Maiku_Ando does close the site down - don't blame you, especially if it's costing you abit with very little traffic - we still have a place to chat to one another. Since - speaking for myself now - I loved being here almost 15 years ago, I thought of most of the regulars here as friends even when in reality I had barely any. This place and the people here really helped me back in the day.

Book club seems like a good idea, I'm in a Facebook group for SciFi books and they have a group read each month and normally I lurk there but I find myself posting more with the group read.

As for me, moved into another house with my partner. Though since me and her have moved in together, turns out I've rather taken to cooking - love my Slow Cooker - and gardening. Never in a million years would I have thought to doing that. I've also taken up walking as a way of exercise, doing 2 5/7 mile walks a week time allowing.

Still reading a plethora of manga, it's funny that manga I started a few years ago finally have anime adaptions this season. I'm slowly dipping my toe back into anime again, but when I know no one who watches it or have to share it with it's a bit demotivating.

Hia, those are some nice plants and I'm glad you're doing well mate. Right now, debating whether to watch something or start read Boarding School Juliet.

Hia, those plants do look really good. Also what is the slow cooker you got? I have heard several people say they are good but never had one myself.

Regarding manga, it would be really cool to revive that section of the forum, maybe even stick some articles on the frontpage, I think it has been years since much was done in the manga area. Feel feel to write anything, review, recommendation or whatever and I'll put it on the front page.

JCD, I think the the missing post was moved by Ryu trying to make us a thread for the anime club. Lets all start by making some suggestions in there? I'd say can be anything, old or new, and then we could have a vote on it? Now I need to figure out what I'd suggest.. hmm.

Also, Hia and JCD, I can set your accounts back to what they were if you are going to be active again, no need to be retired.

So nice to see some actual posts and activity on here, its awesome, please do keep posting :)

Hello Hiasubi, Ando,

sorry for the slow response. I have two small children now, 4 and 1 respectively and it can get turbulent at times.

I am all in for the anime club idea, but I am not sure how that would work exactly, because I only watch 2 at the moment: red mars and odd taxi. Does it mean that when some anime I am actually not watching will be announced for watching, that I have to watch nevertheless to be able to contribute? I guess it would force me to watch more anime in a way, but not sure I would enjoy it all that much.

@Hiasubi, I LOVE cooking and gardening. Sadly, I only have a balcony, but boy oh boy, am I making the most out of it. I grow several kilograms of tomatoes, peppers and other produce each year. Also, end of 2022 i will be moving into a house, if things go according to plan, so then I will have more opportunities.

I can see quite a few Brits on this site probably just as well considering the upload filter that is going to apply to the EU. As for what I am doing I am currently watching the English dub to Uzaki-chan wants to hang out!

In terms of an anime club it would be nice to do one of the up and coming anime but looking at the lineup for summer 2021 anime the main ones I see myself watching are Kobayashi season 2, all roads lead to doom season 2, madoka gaiden season 2 and Scarlet Nexus (planning on the game too). Not sure if that would appeal to all in this thread... If we want to watch a previously aired series then something that has a wide range of appeal would work best. Recent series I can think that could fit that bill would be Jobless reincarnation, Deca Dence or Akudama drive.

Not a big manga reader but I did read up on Cells at work! Code black , Mahou Shoujo Site, Ito Junji Collection as well as Tomie.

Well I'd say the idea is to somewhat make the people in the group watch the voted on anime, and therefore getting us all to watch more or maybe a series we wouldn't otherwise have watched. Maybe put the two ones you are watching as suggestions and see what happens?

Upload filter? I've not heard of that, can you give some details?

Personally I suggested some really old ones and some new, so feel free to drop those into the thread Ryu made.

As for what I'm doing, just some FTV mod stuff, and I just got the bill to renew the forum license due next month, fun lol. Before that, spending too much time on Netflix, posting on here, and noticing its 07:43am and I've not slept yet, so er yea going now.

It is a controversial law applied by the EU. The law means content uploaded to the internet should have an upload filter that automatically detects copyright material so it is blocked. The reasoning behind the law is it would allow artists and small producers to earn more money as they can have greater control on their copyright material. I believe the law is largely directed at the main content providers such as Facebook, Youtube etc. but I am sure websites that are hosted in EU countries would also be expected to follow the laws.

The issue people have is they worry it will stifle freedom of speech. Also I am not sure how easy it is to create such a filter and how you make a distinction between genuine pirating and casual product placement or use of memes and fair use policies etc. That could also cause problems finally if the filters are expensive or complicated to implement it may actually adversely effect smaller websites who will be more dependent on major websites to supply them with the filters. Here is a link from Forbes that covers this upload filter law:

Thanks for explaining it, I think this is basically what Youtube has at the moment, every new upload is checked for any content matches and is flagged right away. That doesn't really apply to us here, firstly we are too small, and secondly, we don't deal with much user content, we do have the gallery, and it can support uploads of videos which could infringe copyright but we follow the DMCA rules and work on the basis if anyone makes a complaint we remove it.

The site is currently hosted in the US and falls under the US copyright laws. My intention is to keep the site in line with the DMCA Safe Harbour provision, which basically means we can't be held liable for user content provided we remove anything that is subject to a DMCA notice. Although it is certainly annoying, especially when over enthusiastic law firms send notices for a poster in the background of screen capture licensed to Crunchyroll, but we still follow them. And that is why the streaming service we had was shutdown, on a technical level it most likely could be updated to work with the current site, but I deemed it wasn't worth it given the complaints from a certain law firm who likes to target us. The reality is, we are Fansub TV, people will assume piracy first and not even bother to look further, even if it is simple links to Crunchyroll.
